Modern Flirtations. By Catherine Sinclair. Edinburgh, William Whyte & Co. 3 Vols. Author's Presentation Copy.
Bound in half green morocco with red morocco gilt titled label to spine and marbled boards and edges. [xiv]; 386 / [iv]; 348 / [iv]; 362 pp.
The top and base of the spine and the corners are slightly rubbed, and the edges of the boards slightly worn. Author's inscription abruptly cropped with resulting loss of the dedicatee's name, although it is reasonable to suppose the dedicatee was Sir James Colquhon, the Fourth Baronet, nephew to Ms. Sinclair. The inscription reads, "... with kindest regards, Catherine Sinclair, 10th May, 1843." This noteworthy date preceded Sir James' marriage by just over a month, making the gift somewhat amusing, given the title. The Colquhoun bookplate to front paste down endpaper of each volume. A very attractive set with lovely gilt tooling to spine.
From the library of Sir James Colquhoun of Luss, nephew of Catherine Sinclair and a possible source of inspiration for the character of Harry in her children's novel 'Holiday House'.
